By far the best meal we have ever had in Northern Michigan. We were thrilled to have a meal that was so thoughtfully prepared and superbly executed. The attention to detail want flavored of each and every item were exquisite. Atmosphere was lovely, restaurant is clean, and the piano player was fabulous. Five star all the way!!!

This review is an an effort to be helpful. This is a restaurant with lots of promise. It has been totally redecorated and although dark for my taste it is nonetheless beautifully done. The tablecloths, cutlery,, glassware, etc. are all first rate and polished. The service is wonderful and last night we had a waiter who had worked at Tapawingo for years. He was excellent. The wine list is well done with some minor inaccuracies. The prices are outlandish with some wines at 3X retail. Wines by the glass are similarly overpriced. Four of us went for dinner which was well served. The Caesar Salad was rated a 3 by all of us. Old greens, weak dressing, hidden anchovies. The main course was rack of lamb, filet and two had the rib eye. The meat looked great, but we all rated it about a 5. My wife thought the lamb wasn't lamb. I am sure it was, but she didn't like the taste and she loves lamb. The filet was average as were the accompaniments. The rib eye had great accompaniments, but the beef was unsatisfying to both parties. Overly salted and not tasty. We had two bottles of wine and the check for four people was $700. Today three of the four of us have GI problems which is always disconcerting! Their fish is farm raised. On a Saturday night they had two tables which should be telling the owners something. Prices need to come down, at least until they are established as a destination restaurant. The wine list needs a haircut and the food has to be vastly improved. We are hoping that all of this happens!

Exciting reinvention. The Walloon Lake Inn has been completely recreated for 2014. Not to diss the restaurant's previous life, but this new beginning is very welcome. Start with the physical. The new owners have completely updated the interior of the place. Okay, maybe I would not have included all the chandeliers, but after so many years of no changes at all, I will take it. The interior space is unrecognizable. The look is modern and very dark--despite the chandeliers. If you loved the old tongue and groove pine, hold your breathe because its painted. Frankly, I think the dramatic changes were necessary. Further, its not like you can't find knotty pine interiors at 1000 other places. The new Walloon Lake Inn is not going for the rustic comfort vibe of the old Walloon Lake Inn. Moving on to the food. I was very impressed. The lobster appetizer was great--sauteed to perfection. The entree menu is adventurous with lamb, fish, and steaks. My rack of lamb was huge--8 chops. Also at my table, the shrimp and grits, which sounds plebeian but looked and apparently tasted great. Service was excellent. Our waiter Sean is an experienced fine dining server. He really knows how to sell a menu and attend to every need. The joint is not cheap, but neither was the old Walloon Lake Inn. The prices were about average for fine dining in the area. All in all, I highly recommend this latest iteration of an old stand by. If you loved the old place, give the new version a fair shake. If you hated the old place, be prepared for something completely different,

Walloon Lake Inn is now (July, 2014) absolutely the best, most memorable restaurant in Northern Michigan. The new owners have redecorated the interior beautifully, complementing the beauty of the lake. They've also hired talented pianists who provide perfect piano bar entertainment every night of the week--providing a wonderful setting for an unforgettable dinner or relaxing after-dinner drink in the piano lounge area. Best of all is the GREAT chef--Daniel Flynn. When we learned that he had been on the staff at Tapawingo Restaurant--formerly the best restaurant in Northern Michigan before it closed--we knew why the food was so great, and the chef is so talented. This is a NOT-TO-MISS treat in Northern Michigan, and one of the very best in all of Michigan.

Any restaurant that you can boat to gets bonus points in my book! Walloon Lake Inn is located in Walloon Lake Village aka "The Foot" and is a beloved local institution. I've been coming here for 30 years and the food is as good as ever. The whitefish and trout are always excellent, and on a recent visit the braised veal cheeks with wild mushroom risotto was amazing. The duck breast with rasberry sauce, the blueberry chevre salad and the chocolate tort were very nice as well. Service is usually good and the dining room has a great view of the lake. The upstairs is a bed and breakfast.

I can honestly say I've never eaten a better piece of fish in my life! My husband and I are taking a summer trip to Walloon Lake, MI, where his family shares a cottage. There aren't that many options in the nearby vicinity of his house, but we love to walk to "The Foot" of the lake every night. Other than a general store, a post office, and some great views of the water, what distinguishes the foot is the Walloon Lake Inn. My husband had been there before when he was younger, and we decided to give it a try for our first night in town. I was immediately taken by the floral wallpaper and light wood paneling. It was old-fashioned and "soft," and of course this makes sense considering that the Inn also doubles as a Bed and Breakfast with five rooms. The service was friendly, and we were given probably the best seat in the house, right by the window, so we could watch the sun glimmer off our water glasses. Each table had a tiny glass vase of bright, fresh flowers. The dining area wasn't huge, but wasn't very confined or small either. When we arrived, we were one of three tables occupied, but by the time we left, almost every seat was taken. The menu had a lot of appetizers of different varieties to choose from, ranging from soups to salads to pot stickers and tenderloin satay. The entree list was not very long, and was mostly comprised of fish dishes. However, they had about five specials that night. I chose one of them, the pan-seared Alaskan Halibut with lemon-dill risotto, leeks, and a ginger-carrot broth. My husband had the hanger steak with pesto, a southwestern rub, and these ridiculously good whipped potatoes with cheese. Both dishes were served with fresh vegetables. The salads were beautiful. They were decorated with fresh flowers from the garden. The greens were chilled and crisp, and I loved the dressing. My husband tried the special salad, which had strawberries, currants, and chevre. The bread basket also stood out--piping hot, sturdy, crispy rolls with whipped butter. Classic and delicious. The entrees were out of this world. I thought back to my top three "fish dish moments" of my life and this trumped each one. The halibut was perfectly cooked; it was moist and flavorful on its own, but when you added all the other components to it, it was unique and memorable. My husband loved his steak, as did I (because of course I had to try it, along with the potatoes and the pesto). A GREAT job. My dish also had a single tiny flower on top, again from the garden - what a nice touch. I refrained from eating dessert, but my husband wanted some. He giggled like a five-year-old when the waiter mentioned they specialized in three different types of Hummers (I had never heard this term before, but apparently in this area it refers to a milkshake made with alcohol - sort of like a Mudslide). The traditional Hummer had vanilla ice cream, kahlua, myer's rum,and vodka. Their "signature" Hummer had that but also added chambord and chocolate chips. Finally, they had one that included a piped homemade chocolate mousse within the drink. That's the one he went for. And he wolfed it down...after it was all over, he had a very strong "ice cream headache" considering the fact that he was majorly buzzed. Or, er, Hummed? Anyway. Going to the Walloon Lake Inn was a great choice. We had a wonderful meal all around; the service was fantastic, and the food was definitely something to remember.
